Chichen Itza (sounds like Chicken Pizza – as my guide told me), is one of the most visited archaeological sites in Mexico. It was one of the largest Maya cities and was likely to have been one of the mythical great cities, referred to in later Mesoamerican literature. The city may have had the most diverse population in the Maya world, a factor that could have contributed to the variety of architectural styles at the site. I found it difficult to get this shot without any of the many tourists that visit each day and while they would have provided scale, I prefered not to distract from the lines of the structure. Having originally processed this as a black and white image I changed to sepia tones to reflect this ancient building.
